Many animals respond to light stimuli but among different animals, different senses dominate. In humans and birds sight undoubtedly comes first. Most mammals rely on smell and hearing and most insects rely upon smell and taste. It is therefore not too surprising that light reception in animals varies. This article considers the differences in eye structure and function found in the animal world.
