New Zealand's unique wildlife has been devastated by the arrival of humans, together with their cats, dogs, rats and other non-native species. Many indigenous species have become extinct, and others, including the large flightless parrot, the kakapo, are critically endangered. The author, a geneticists investigates how the New Zealand government is trying to save the iconic kakapoo from extinction.
