Making the political personal - narrative stategies in Hard Times.
The author puts Dickens' novel in the context of other writers and social reformers of the time who believed that novels had the power to change society by winning hearts and minds. In the end though, he wonders whether in the tension between individual stories and political messages the narrative is put under too much strain.
