Julius Caesar - a play of our time?
Julius Caesar (100 - 44 BCE) was a triumphant Roman general whose amition to become sole ruler of Rome provoked his assassination by is Republican opponents who did not want to see absolute power held by one man. Shakespeare's play (1599) follows the bloody consequences as Caesar's followers whip up the fury of the Roman people, and the conspirators, led by Brutus and Cassius, become bitter enemies.
