Keeping mum - the silence of Gertrude in Hamlet.
The author questions readings of Gertrude that minimise her importance, arguing rather that her character is ripe for rich interpretation. Shakespeare, she argues, offers us plenty of scope for thinking about Gertrude's invidious position, which is at the heart of the play, rather than peripheral to it.
