Today's sociology of the family and gender draws inspiration from 1970's feminism, which aimed to reshape the academic study of women as well as their social roles. In this article the feminist sociologist Ann Oakley reflects on her own work in this area, and on some of the key continuities and changes in the experience and study of gender over the past 40 years.
