Susan Hill's novel The Woman in Black is one of the most famous moder-day examples of the ghost story, a branch of gothic fiction. The author looks at the ways in which the author self-consciously employs earlier texts and the traditional elements of the ghost story, both to meet and to subvert the expectations of the reader.
