In the summer of 2001 a series of disturbances erupted in Oldham, Burnley and Bradford. They prompted questions about how a society that contains an increasingly large number of faith and ethnic groups can remain cohesive. The author discusses whether religion can help to unite communities that have been damaged by civil unrest.
