Chimpanzees are our closest relatives and we have learned much from them about our own evolutionary history and about human disease. But chimps are under threat from loss of habitat, exploitation and the spread of diseases from a growing human population. The authors highlight the efforts being made to conserve chimps and the problems associated with using them in research.
