At the turn of the 20th century, millions of people around Britain and Europe first saw black and brown people in what were hugely popular exhibitions known as "human zoos". Novelist Naifa Mohammed looks into the stories of people who took part in these all but forgotten spectacles, uncovering remarkable, shocking and moving tales, from love affaiors that scandalise Britain to the scientific experiments some of them were forced to endure.
