Cilia are hair-like organelles that project from the membranes of various eukaryotic cells. Flagella are structurally similar to cilia but are usually longer. It is thought that when cilia and glagella originally eveolved they propelled single-celled organisms through their watery habitats by beating to and fro. In multicellular organisms they have many different functions.
