In 1493 Columbus returned to Europe from his voyage to the Americas. He brought back exotic new goods, including pumpkins and tobacco. It is well known that travellers to the 'new world' exported infectious diseases, but they also brought new diseases back to Europe. The author, a microbiologist, looks at the possible history of one of these diseases.
